A new law and a new Grand-Ducal regulation on State financial aid for higher education will enter into force on 1 August 2026.

This reform modernises the AideFi system and introduces several important improvements for students. Below is an overview of the changes applicable for the 2026/2027 academic year:

1/ Automatic indexation of aid amounts

The grants (basic, social, family, mobility) are now expressed at index 100 and automatically adjusted each semester according to the evolution of the wage index.

2/ Mobility grant: strengthened conditions

The mobility grant is now reserved for students who rent accommodation abroad for at least two months per semester during their studies. The amount has been increased (see summary table below).

3/ Expanded eligible expenses

Students may obtain reimbursement of up to €3,800 per year for:

  • enrolment and tuition fees,
  • application fees,
  • language tests,
  • equivalence procedures,
  • official translations.

Previously, eligible expenses were more limited (mainly enrolment and tuition fees).

The request must be submitted no later than 31 July of the relevant academic year, and this additional study‑related allowance is allocated 50% as an increase to the basic grant and 50% as an increase to the student loan.

4/ Student loans: now variable-rate

The interest rate is no longer capped at 2%. It becomes variable, depends on financial market conditions, and will be revised twice a year.

The rate is calculated as follows:
6‑month EURIBOR + 0.2% – maximum reduction of 1.8% covered by the State
(never falling below 0%)

Example:
If the 6‑month EURIBOR is 2.5%:
Lender’s rate = 2.7%
State reduction = 1.8%
Final rate = 0.9%

5/ Part-time studies

The framework is clarified:

  • aid is paid proportionally,
  • the eligibility period is extended to reflect the reduced study pace.

6/ Completion bonus

A €250 bonus is introduced for obtaining a bachelor’s or master’s degree.

The application (including all supporting documents) must be submitted no later than 31 December of the academic year following the completion of the relevant study programme.

7/ Doctoral candidates

Aid for doctoral studies is now managed by the National Research Fund (FNR) to provide support tailored to the specific nature of doctoral programmes.

Important note

Students may submit their financial aid application for the winter semester from 1 August 2026 until 30 November 2026.

We strongly encourage students to file their application as early as possible to avoid processing delays at the end of the submission period.

Specific rule for non‑residents

Luxembourg financial aid cannot be combined with any student support that may be available in the country of residence. Students must therefore first submit a financial aid application in their country of residence in order to obtain an official certificate confirming that they are not entitled to a national grant.

This certificate must then be provided to Luxembourg as part of the AideFi application.

Plan ahead, as obtaining this document may take time.
