As a self-employed person affiliated with Luxembourg’s social security system, you may voluntarily join the Employers’ Mutual Insurance (MDE) to help protect your income in the event of incapacity for work.

While the CNS sickness cash benefit is suspended, the MDE refunds 80% of the contribution base applicable to you when the incapacity for work begins.

For self-employed people, the CNS benefit remains suspended until the end of the month in which the 77th day of incapacity for work occurs, calculated over a reference period of 18 consecutive calendar months. The CNS then takes over from the following month.

The MDE therefore covers the period not covered by the CNS. The amount reimbursed will be credited to the self-employed person’s monthly CCSS statement for the relevant month.

Membership conditions and deadlines

Membership of the MDE is voluntary. Applications must be submitted using the form available on the CCSS website.

Have you been affiliated as a self-employed person for less than three months?

If you submit your application within three months of the start of your affiliation, membership may take effect from the beginning of your affiliation.

Have you been affiliated as a self-employed person for more than three months?

If you apply during the year, membership will take effect on 1 January of the following year.

Protection and simplified procedures

Joining the MDE means benefiting from protection and simplified administration:

  • Income support in the event of sick leave, during the period not covered by the CNS;
  • A straightforward contribution, included directly in your CCSS bills and tax-deductible.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or need further clarification!
